Full Description
Stonar Cut TR 3340 6116 A short canal cut (c175m) at Stonar, constructed under the Sandwich Drainage Act of 1776, enabling shipping to avoid the River Stour's long meander through Sandwich. A tidal cut without locks. (1)
The Stonar Cut survives and floodwater is still a managed via a sluice through it. The Cut is crossed by the recently dualled A256 Ramsgate Road which caused the relocation of the sluice. The Stonar Cut
suffers from considerable silting and within its mud lie the wreck of a Second World War German fast mine sweeper abandoned in the 1970s.
