Full Description

Allington Lock nr Maidstone, built as a flash lock by the Lower Medway navigation Company following an Act of Parliament in 1792. An illustration of 1830 (1) shows the lock, featuring a single pair of timber gates, placed against the south bank of th Medway with a weir, approximately the same width as the lock on its N side. Rebuilt as a pound lock c1847 and deepened in 1880. (2) Amended in 1936-7 with electronic flood gates, and remains largely unchanged since. (3)
