Full Description

In 2009 a desk based assessment was undertaken at the site of The Dunton Green Brick, Tile and Pottery works, which was established in 1862, though brick and tile making in the area had started occurring prior to 1862. The works included clay extraction pits, kilns and the late 19th century engine house at Rye Lane. In 1869 Ordnance Survey maps shows the Brick Works comprising of an Engine House, a clay extraction pit and a row of work buildings probably kilns. (2)

Site of a brick and tile works opened by Wreford's in 1920s near Dunton Green station. Single rail line connected to main line, the Dunton Green to Westerham line. Access from Pounsley Road. Centred TQ 5150 5694 at site of drying sheds, with kilns to east. Line opened in 1881 and closed 1955, redeveloped as commercial estate. (1)(2)

By 1896 four clay extraction pits are situated on the site, three to the north and one to the south west and relate to the brick works. The clay was dug by hand and loaded on to trolleys on a rail track. By 1905 some of these were infilled and flooded, to be used as ponds. By 1936 the railway line across the site had been removed and a large clay pit was dug in the centre of the site. Two large rectangular buildings were added to the site along with five circular kilns. (2)

By 1950 the clay on site had been exhausted, several trail pits were dug and this was confirmed, this lead to the closure of the works in 1956. They were infilled with rubble from the London bombing during the Second World War. Nothing remains above ground of the brick works. Between 1960-3 the Cold Store depot had begun to be built. (2)

In 2010 a watching breif occurred on the site also. In seeveral of the test pits levelling deposits and brick surfaces were encountered relating to the brick works. In several of the trenches and test pits remnains of kilns, wooden railway sleepers and quarry pits were encountered.. The earliest of kilns found on this site was in Area B. The kiln strcutures in Area C was found to have kiln debris from usage which the kiln as well. (3)
