Full Description
The Sussex Arms TQ 580 386 early 18th century public house. Excavation in the cellar revealled timber piles and a timber foundation raft sealing a midden of domestic refuse of C17 date. The timber remains located almost cetainly represent the foundation elements of a substatial sttructure or structures. Two separate techniques were employed, a) piled foundations using timber post (reused timber) and b) flat foundation plae using large squared baulks of timber. They were designed to support a timber or part timber/stone structure. The alignment of the structures is maintained in the builidngs exsisitng today. Discarded domestic rubbish found seal beneath the structure suggests that the building was perhaps constructed in the 17th century. The discarded pottery, glass and clay-pipes may have been discarded into a stream that was nearby. (1)
