Full Description
Poss site of St Mary's Church TQ 6393 7353. Mentioned in Domesday, rebuilt 1 mile closer to the modern town in 1510. Site of the church is uncertain but may have been on a parcel of glebe land mapped in 1803 (1)
A 2017 Heritage Statement suggested that the church was re-built and re-consecrated in 1510 having been destroyed by a fire in c. 1508/9 but was demolished by order of Henry VIII in 1544. There is some doubt about this as a rector was still officiating in 1581 and several people buried in the churchyard in 1598. The foundations were later dug up in c. 1797 by the owner of the adjoining farm. Gravestones were excavated nearby in 1822. (2)
