Full Description

Iron Age coins found at or near Gravesend:- [A] Gold stater, Allen type Gallo-Belgic Aa1 (Bellovaci), [Mack No. 1, Evans type A.1,2 or 8.] Found in Thames, now in Ashmolean Museum. [B] Gold stater, Allen type Gallo-Belgic Ab1 [Bellavaci), Evans Type A.4 [Mack No. 3]. Present whereabouts unknown. [C] Gold stater, Allen type Gallo-Belgic Bb1 (Defaced Dies, Bellovaci), [Mack No. 7, Evans type D.2 or K.2]. Now in British Museum. [D] Gold stater, Allen type Gallo-Belgic C (Atrebates) Evans type B.7 [Mack No. 26 or 30]. Now in Gravesend Museum. [E] Gold stater, Allen type Gallo-Belgic E (Morini), [Mack No. 27 or 27a Evans type B.8]. Found in 1887, now in Ashmolean Museum. [F] As above, noted at British Museum, 1939. G Two bronze coins, Allen type LY6 (South of Thames Group, North Kentish Section). [Mack No. 295, Evans type G.13.] Now in Gravesend Museum. [H.] Tin or speculum coin Allen Class 1, found on Thames bank 1897. Noted in Evans own copy of A.B.C. preserved at Ashmolean Museum. Then in G.M. Arnold collection. [See J] [J] Tin or speculum coin in Gravesend Museum; a prototype or import from Gaul; may be same as preceding coin. [K] Bronze coin of Dubnovellaunus in Gravesend Museum. [L] Coin of Cunobelin (1). [M] A gold stater of Tasciovanus (Evans v.8-9: Mack 149-50) found at Shorne near Gravesend. Whereabouts unknown. [N] A gold stater of Dubnovellaunus (Evans iv-10: Mack No. 282) with a coin of Tasciovanus: whereabouts unknown. (1-3) D,G,J, & K are in Gravesend Musuem but, in company with the remainder of the coins listed, no details of their exact provenance etc, are known (2).
