Full Description
Bexley Hospital, one of 6 mental hsopitals built by LCC 1896-8 to designs by GT Hine and a modification of his design at Claybury, Essex that was to become the model for three others. Incorporates Balldwyns Park House, a classical house of early C19 once the residence of Hiram Maxim. The hospital ward blocks take the form of 2 storey pavillions linked together by a semi cricular spine corridor and arranged in an echelon formation affroding each an uninterupted south frontage. Main corridor also linked to service and admin blocks. Wards for epilepticsand patients working in the laundry or workshops set apart from main group plus 3 villas for patients working on hospital farm, a hospital villa for female patients and an isolation hospital. Stewards house at main entrance. Chapel nr admin block on N side of complex. water tower with integral chimney. The design is austere and stark. Male hospital villa added 1906, TB ward 1912-13, 2 storey nurses home 1927, extendede 1935. (1) Later developments added additional patient villas, an isolation hospital (demolished and acute hospital buildings (demolished). The Hospital closed in the late 1990s/2000s and set for housing redevelopment. Some of the buildings will remian such as the original mansion house and the chapel.(1,2)
