Full Description

[Area TQ 689 732 - sited from plan (2) See AO/LP/64/69] Gravel working c. 1952 in Lower Shorne Field, East Chalk, uncovered the following Roman remains:- Kilns Ten were reported but only one was examined and found to be associated with mid-2nd c. pottery fragments including a complete pot. The other nine must be treated as unconfirmed and may have been merely rubbish pits. Rubbish Pits A number of pits and trenches in no apparent order were found in the north-eastern part of the excavations. They were filled with domestic rubbish and one pit contained the rim of a Patchgrove storage jar. Occupaton Levels The pits and trenches, after the top soil had been removed, were seen to be associated with an occupation extending over the first two centuries of the Roman period. Graves. Nine graves, all orientated north-south with the feet apparently to the south, were uncovered by the excavator. No skeletal remains were found but traces of wooden coffins were. Generally, all the associated pottery is 4th c. After the gravel pit was closed, two kilns in the NE corner were excavated. One, an updraft kiln of Grimes type II, overlapped an earlier one. Coarse pottery of 1st/2nd c. type was found. Some 48 ft. south-east a trench was found to contain domestic rubbish including five miniature Roman pots, 2 in high of probable 1st c. date (3) (4) [See AO/LP/64/70.] A long period of R.B. settlemnent is indicated, apparently associated with pottery making until the beginning of the 3rd c., after which it continued on an agricultural basis as is suggested by the bootstuds found in the 4th or early 5th c. graves.(2) (1-4) The pit is disused and now under pasture. All finds, with the exception of some pieces of a late hand-made pottery (? Saxon) retained by the excavator operator who found them, (a) are now in the Maidstone Museum. (5) Additional bibliography.
