Full Description

Concrete type 24 pillbox on edge of field W. of Town Rd, Cliffe. Fronted by a small drainage ditch, faces NE. Narrow wall version with brick skin. (1)

This feature is recorded in the English Heritage report on the Second World War Stop Line in the Hoo Peninsula. The report states: "Second World War Type 24 pillbox, reinforced concrete. Faces north east and is fronted by a small drainage ditch. Narrow wall version with brick skin. Condition: Recorded on 2007 aerial photographs and marked on recent OS 1:25000 scale map at edge of orchard off footpath from B2000. " (2)

The structural remains of a pillbox thought to be that referred to by this listing above was seen at TQ 7342 73745 (40m to the SSW of the given location) at the edge of an orchard between Buckland Rd and Town Rd, NW of Cliffe Woods. This pillbox was mapped from 1952 RAF photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. It was still extant when photographed in 2007and is recorded as a structure on the current Ordnance Survey 1:2500 scale Mastermap. (2-3)
