Full Description
Concrete type 24 pillbox in middle of field to west of Town Rd, Cliffe. Faces west, a narrow wall version with brick skin. Situated on cultivated land.
This feature is recorded in the English Heritage report on the Second World Stop Line in the Hoo Peninsula. The report states: "Second World War reinforced concrete Type 24 pillbox, located at the edge of field to the west of Town Road, Cliffe, approximately 184m to the west of the anti-tank ditch. The pillbox faces west and is a narrow wall version with a brick skin. It is situated on cultivated land at the western edge of a field. Condition: The pillbox is visible as an extant structure on recent aerial imagery (Google Earth 2013)." (2)

The pillbox described by the previous authority was seen at TQ 7346 7432 at the western edge of a field (formerly an orchard during the war), adjacent toTown Road, Cliffe. This pillbox forms part of the wartime anti-invasion defences of the stop line across the Hoo Peninsula. The main feature of this stop line was an anti-tank ditch, the traces of which extend northwards along the inside of the eastern side of the field 185m to the east. The pillbox and surrounding features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (3)
