In 1995 an excavation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology along a pipeline between Deal and Ramsgate, at Sandwich Bay. There was a possibility for Stonars medieval shoreline would be exposed, such as evidecen for quays or quayside structures. 12 timber stakes were recorded and four recovered, from over a distance of 50m. Some of the stakes were not observed in situ and some had been damaged due to machining. They rnaged in length between 0.88m and 1.39m and all had the bottoms trimmed to be driven into the ground. One example had a possible sawed top but for the most part the tops had rotted away. One larger sub-rectangular timber was recovered, but it was not in a secure context. No pattern could be seen from the layout of the stakes. Samples from two fo the stakes were sent for radiocarbon dating and produced calibrated dates of AD 1650-1950 and AD 1670-1955. These were interpreted at the remains of the medieval waterfront. (1)
