Full Description
In 1995 an excavation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology along a pipeline between Deal and Ramsgate, at Sandwich Bay. Four substanial timber posts or stakes were found in siyu, but close archaeological examination of them was not possible. They appeared in a line below the road and were spaced at roughly 1m intervals. One was recovered due to it needing to be removed for the pipeline, the top had rotted butt here was clear evidence that several of the side branches had been removed with an exe or adze. There is the suggestion that the stakes may derive from a logboat. The timber is beech and come from a hollowed out tree. The sample submitted to radiocarbon dating suggested a date for AD 970-1160. It may perhaps form part of a medieval causeway. (1)
