Full Description
Water powered papermill, later a cornmill and now a house. 1st doc. ref. in 1653. Map of 1801 shows 2 mill ponds, one on the main course of the river and asecond parallel to it on the E side. The mill ceased operating as a papermill between 1854 and 1856. In 1865 the existing mill (adjoined to the mill house) was replaced by 2 separate buildings. It is presumably this new mill that is described, in 1882, as a 4 storey building with three pairs of stones. Anciliary buildings served as a stable, store and mill offices. In 1818-1819, the W. mill pond was filled in. C. 1912, the mill was closed and converted to a dwelling. An inspection in 1972 identified a gear pit and 4 cast iron pillars in the cellar with stone floor above. At this time the corn bins were said to have still been in the roof. The water wheel axle tunnel had been bricked in and the wheel-pit part filled with rubble. (1)
