Monument record TQ 74 SE 17 - Lovehurst Manor Mill, Staplehurst

Summary

Lovehurst Manor Mill is a post-medieval, water-powered cornmill. It consists of a 3 storey L-plan brick and weather board water powered cornmill, converted to a dwelling circa 1972. There is a mill pond to the east with a mill race to the south. The undershot wheel has been removed but the wheel pit is still exposed with a blocked axle hole in the south wall of the mill buildings. In 1995 excavations for an extension revealed part of the pit wall and bearing but no other buildings.The wheel was originally covered by a cat-slide roof.

Full Description

3 storey L-plan brick and weatherboarded water powered cornmill converted to dwelling c.1972. Mill pond to E. with race at S. side of mill building. Undershot (?) wheel removed, but wheel pit still exposed with blocked axle hole in S. wall of mill building. Excavation for extension at S. side of wheel pit in 1995 revealed part of pit wall and bearing, but no anciliary buildings. Wheel originally covered by cat-slide roof. L section at R-angles to W end of mill building built over tail race (1)
