Full Description
Site of mill first noted in 1706, but only known for sure as a paper mill from 1740 when John Farley resident. Major rebuilding by James Whatman in 1775, from 1796 mill operated by Hollingworth's also owner of Gurney's Mill. Around mid C19 it was converted to a corn mill. Layout of c.1890 included a new mill building adjacent to older one. The old mill was water powered by a 19' wheel combining both breast and overshot power (the latter from Springhead pond immediately upstream of the mill, the former channeled some distance from leg o mutton pond at TQ 7622 5200) and equiped with 3 pairs of stones. The new mill was built to accommodate roller mills powered by a beam engine. Upper mill was closed in 1908 the machinery being removed soon after and the buildings left derelict. The steam engine boiler house and chimney was pulled down in WW1. Sluice from Springhead pond blocked off. Some brickwork relating to headrace from Springhead pond still seen in mill house garden.
