Full Description

Water meadow system of mis C19 date (does not seem to be on 1840 tithe map) in Great House Meadow, Shoreham centred TQ 520 613). The system forms a large rectangle some 380m long and 80-100m wide orientated parallel with the former course of the Darent. The system took its water from Home Farm mill pond, reportedly by means of an hydraulic ram at TQ 5201 6099, to an aqueduct over the former Darent plus by a channel from furthur upstream on that stream. The feeder then split into two arms, one at the top of the field and one near the stream, before rejoining and flowing back into the stream. Although the channels have been filled in a series of cisterns and sluices can still be seen, in both brick and concrete. (1)
