Monument record TQ 75 SW 72 - 1 The Green,Charlton Street, West Farleigh

Summary

Excavations at the rear of this 18th century cottage revealed signs of an earlier building. A finely carved stone door jamb was uncovered and the lower courses of a burnt stone wall. Ragstone footings were also found in situ. The excavations also uncovered a curved wall and a tiled floor on timber staging. This suggests the possible site of an ice-house.

Full Description

1 The Green, Charlton St, W farleigh. Cottage of c1800. Excavation at rear of cottage revealled finely carved stone door jamb, lower courses of burnt stone wall and ragstone footings in situ, remains of previous building on site. Also observed section of curved wall and tiled floor on timber staging, possible ice well (1)

The presence of an ice well is dubious, but there was probably a substantial building on the site which burnt down, with the current cottages built on the foundations. (2)
