Full Description
Remains of the PM manor of Davington Court consist of a listed wall, formerly enclosing Davington Court garden, but now enclosing the back gardens of nos. 9-12 Stephens Close. The lower 4-5 courses of the wall are masoned blockwork, which may be older, related to a different wall structure and/or reused from another site. The upper part of the wall is of red brick. An archway dated to 1624 is situated towards the N. end and a fine, round-headed, moulded gateway is incorporated into the original wall in the garden of no. 9. Davington Court was apparently demolished in the 1960's. An arch. watching brief at 12 Stephens Close, 1994, located a red brick structure/foundation with cream mortar. This was situated adjacent to the supporting buttress of the gateway and overlies a spread of thick cream mortar. A substantial damaged, rounded masonry block was discovered, along with a column with a Lewis hole. These structures were found to lay above brown earth. (1)
