Monument record TR 05 SE 127 - Watercress beds (probable) at Godmersham

Summary

A water-filled dyke with a retaining stone wall on the west bank is situated near Godmersham. The site is known locally known as the water cress beds however there is no indication of such a site on the Ordnance Survey historic maps and no further information was available. This site is fed by springs from the foot of Temple Hill which is normally a good indicator of a watercress bed

Full Description

Water-filled dyke, centred on approx. TR 0650 5060. Runs from TR 0657 5114 to TR 0645 5095. Retaining stone wall on W. bank, fed by springs from foot of Temple Hill, runs into river Stour. Locally known as the water cress beds. In 1800, the river and dyke follow different routes. (1)
