Full Description

Dukes Head Bridge formed a defended E. perimeter to Royal Staff Corps barracks on the N. bank of the Royal Military Canal. 5 phases of work: 1805- timber swing bridge, no evidence of this construction found on excavation. 1808- swing gearing and timber frame replaced with fixed Oak deck on brick abutments. Stone wharf and loading bay built. 1813- Bridge torn down, replaced by large stone blocks carrying a fixed timber deck across the canal. Blocks found intact during excavation. 1827- Transformation into substantial brick bridge with single span. Built around 1813 construction. Foundations exposed during excavation. 1940- Strengthening of bridge. 1993- Dismantled 1992 and new structure built- concrete beam supported by driven concrete piles. The Wharf- constructed of large, irregular-sized ragstone blocks. Mooring points and Oak planks forming the foundation discovered during excavation. Vertical shaft in wharf bank discovered. (1)
