Monument record TQ 67 SE 40 - Late Iron Age site, Thong lane

Summary

During the latter part of summer 1982, earth moving operations to provide playing fields for Thamesview School in Thong Lane brought to light significant amounts of occupational debris. Rescue work to retrieve material was undertaken immediately due to its imminent destruction. An interesting, if fragmentary, assemblage of late Iron Age pottery has been recorded as well as a large quantity of mammalian bone, an intriguing fragment of human skull and a complete bronze brooch. A roughly circular impression was noted, approximately 7.5m in diameter, with two or possibly three `hearths' of indeterminate use. Fragments of loom weight and several pieces of iron slag were also retrieved. It is possible that the full extent of the site lies undiscovered or has been destroyed in earlier development. The pottery dates from around 10BC until the eve of the Conquest.
