Monument record TQ 54 SE 19 - Scotch kiln and brickworks, near Forge Farm, Southborough

Summary

The remains of a probable 19th century scotch kiln and brickworks are located near Forge Farm. A square section brick chimney was thought to still be standing in the 70's but the adjacent scotch kiln was ruinous. The remainders of the site is covered by heavy undergrowth with evidence of waste pottery. A Victorian bottle dump and cinder have also been found in the area.

Full Description

Brickworks in the field to SE of Forge Farm. Square section brick chimney still standing but adjacent scotch kiln ruinous (was still intact in 1978 and used as cow shed (1)). Rest of works to S marked by overgrown piles of wasters, poss covering rems of other structures. Wasters also seen in bed of stream nearby along with Victorian bottle dump and cinder. Site prob C19.
