Summary

A disused swing bridge over the Thames and Medway Canal (opened 1824). There is a large cast iron counter weight on the north side of the bridge but there is no sign of cables or gearing for operating the bridge.

Full Description

[TQ676 739] Swing Bridge. This bridge is over a section of the Thames and Medway Canal which is still in water. There is a large cast iron counter weight on the landward N end of the bridge but there is no sign of cables or gearing for operating the bridge. As it appears to be only an accomodation bridge it was probably opened by hand (1), site photographs (2-11). The bridge has been restored, but it is blocked at the south end and can only be crossed by foot. (12)
