Monument record TQ 63 NE 19 - Possible post medieval industrial area, Brookland Wood, Lamberhurst

Summary

Brookland Wood was known as Brick Land Wood in 1839-41. On the basis of this evidence the area is thought to have been used for clay extraction. The coppice woodland may also have served as a source of fuel for this industry. There are a number of ponds in the area and it is possible that these may be the remains of previous extraction pits.

Full Description

Brookland Wood was named Brick Land Wood in 1839-41. The name suggests that this area was at some time given over to clay extraction and the use of coppice woodland as a source of fuel. Brick manufacture need not have been undertaken in the vicinity. Numerous ponds in the area may denote previous extraction points. (1)
