Full Description
Site of Second World War pillbox, Wraik Hill, Whistable. It lay on the eastern side of Wriak Hill in woodland. A similar one was found nearby. Both were part of Kent's 1940 anti-invasion defences. They are both part of a more extensive defence system. They were reccommended for being preserved prior to work on Thanet Way. (2)
Thought to have been demolished when Wraik Hill was redirected to join the Thanet Way. Evidence of this redirection can be seen on 4th edition OS maps (1929-52).
In 1990 an assessment in anticipation of the construction of Thanet way was undertaken. Two Second World War pillboxes were found within 100m of the route. One at Clapham Hill and the other at Wraik Hil. Towards the western end of Thanet Way. Type 24 Concrete, hexagonal pillboxes, designed as rifle and Bren gun emplacements and intended to hold 8 men. The pillbox at TR 10200 64402 was been bricked up. The pillboxes are set about 265m apart and face to the north. (2)
Photographic evidence of the pillbox situated on Wraik Hill was be seen in the 1990 assessment. (1)
