7ft of the RB town wall was discovered, including a culvert which was enclosed in a bank on the site of some recently demolished cottages. Pottery from the bank, which included a fragment of Castor ware, is consistent with a LC2 date. There was no evidence of any rampant or gate in this areaThe bank was levelled in medieval times and a substantial wall built onto it, fragments of pottery dating it to the Mid-C13. This proabaly represents the medieval gate-house. A circular building was later constructed adjacent to this and was demolished by the C16. (1)
