Monument record TQ 76 NW 274 - Roman wall and bank, later the medieval gate house, Northgate

Summary

Part of the Romano-British town wall. Pottery included a fragment of Castor ware and dated to the late 2nd century. The bank was levelled in the medieval period and a substantial wall was built onto it. Interpreted as part of the medieval gate house and dated to the mid 13th century by fragments of pottery. A circular structure was also demolished at the site by the 16th century.
