Full Description
Excavations within the gymnasium of King's School were undertaken by CAT in advance of the insertion of a new floor. A 10m length of the C3 RB city wall was revealed with part of it's reinforcing earthen rampart, though unfortunately not abutting the wall. Overlying these features was a dark earth deposit, 0.7m thick, which produced LRB and AS material. A flint wall, probably part of the new precinct wall constructed by Prior Wilbert in c.1160 was located. A small area of gravel to the N. may be part of Queningate. The chalk walls of the E. extension of St. Mary-over-Northgate were revealed, of possible 1390-95 date. Evidence for the construction of the 1546 gate was revealed, together with the chalk and flint dwarf walls of C16/17 row of cottages. (1)
