Full Description
NW Gillingham Gate into Chatham Dockyard, area now Chatham commercial dockyard. Rail access through the gate was defened by a rail block inside the dockyard wall and a pillbox adjacent. The 11 sided concrete one man pillbox or sentry post with domed top set on top of concrete slab roof of rectangular brick building. 5 loopholes in 14' thick walls, hinged concrete door, probably originally lined in timber internally. The building below had a single room with with a lobby behind, entrances at either end and an internal division for a toilet. Entrances have inner timber and outer steel doors. Wall of eastern entrance lobby serves to support the pillbox above. Access to roof and pillbox by former outside ladder. Pillbox is of WW1 type used at naval establishments. Demolished 1996. (1-2)
