Full Description

On 30.1.1840, eight cinerary urns in two rows of four, each urn 2 ft. apart were found in a meadow at Skeynes, 1/2 mile east [sic.] of [Edenbridge] village, "about forty yards from an ancient manor house which I lately pulled down. "The urns, "supposed to be Roman," contained calcined bones and earth, and were made of half-burnt clay, black in the interior and red on the surface. No tile or covering was found. All were broken and the conjectural sizes 11-12 ins. high, about 9 ins. diameter at the bulge and 5 ins diameter at the bottom. (1)

The present owner of Skeynes (a), whilst aware of this find, has no idea where it was made on the estate, and the site of the earlier manor house of Skeynes is not now known. (2)

In 1840 some urns, probably British, were unearthed at Skeynes, within a mile of the present village. No traces of Roman occupation have been found. (3)

Eight "Romano-British" burial urns were discovered in 1840 in Skeynes Park, TQ 433461. (4)
