Full Description
Documentary evidence shows that a mill was erected on the banks of the river Stour at The Causeway from the C12 onwards. This was supplemented by arch evidence. Stripping of modern levelling exposed an extensive range of brick foundations and gravel and brick courtyards, probably representing the full extent of the mill in it's final phase. Sevearl earlier phases of construction were either incorporated within or covered by this phase. Wall foundations of brick and mortar of Tudor and Jacobean type were exposed in most areas occupied by the later mill and also further to the South. Well preserved timber structures of MD and Romano-British date were encountered, the Romano-British structures representing the Romano-British river frontage. (1)
