Monument record TQ 76 NE 309 - Possible site of a late Saxon Battlefield, Gillingham
Summary
Possible site of a battle between Edmund Ironside and Canute at Gillingham in AD 1016. This Battle is mentioned in the Annals of St Austin (Hasted) and is marked at this location on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th edition Ordnance Survey maps. There is some uncertainty as to whether this is the correct location or a mistake by the Ordnance Survey inaccurately locating the site.
