Full Description

Tovil Branch line, constructed 1887 to provide the Tovil paper mills with a link to the SER Maidstone-Tonbridge line on the N side of the R Medway. Line disused and partly redeveloped by 1980s. The single track line was raised on an embankment for its whole length and terminated in good disdings with ten tracks. Embankment on N bank of Medway survives but much of that to the S has been levelled to make way for warehousing. The bridge accross the river (at TQ 7517 5483) has been dismantled but three stone piers, two on the N side and one on the S side, remain. The S one has been lowered and acts as a bank retaining wall. A fourth pier on the S side has been removed. The embankment continues S of Lower Tovil Road with the one surviving abutment of the former bridge over the road. The footpath tunnel under the embankment known as Hayman's Bridge was still intact and in use (at TQ 7516 5416) in 1991 but subsequently has been removed, only the aboutments remaining. It was built in 1887 by Joseph Westwood of London and is a simple round arched skew structure in stock brick. The embankment continues to the site of goods sindings (at TQ 7524 5450) which have been redeveloped as carparking. (1)
