Monument record TR 36 NE 243 - Site of Brickfield at Callis Grange School, St. Peter's Broadstairs

Summary

Evidence of a 19th century brickfield was found during evaluation trenching in 1996. A number of brick pits that had been backfilled were revealed but there appeared to be no evidence of kiln structures. A brickfield is marked at this location on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of c.1858-1873. Thought to also be the site of a 15th century house.

Full Description

Evaluation trenching by the Trust for Thanet Archaeology in July 1996 showed that the area had been removed down to the underlaying chalk and then backfilled with redeposited subsoil and spreads of chalk rubble, possibly floors or dumping. This lead to the suggestion that these deposits were either the results of being a brickfield or clay quarry site, or the remains of a 15th century house known as Callis Court or Grange which was demolished in the late 19th century. The precice location of this building is not known. (1)

Site of brickworks at Callis Grange marked on OS map of c1870. Now school playing fields. Investigations by CAT in 1996 and 1997 revealed part of the brick pit and the subsequent backfilling but no evidence of kiln or other structures. Boundary marked and named 'Brickfield' on OS 6" 1st ed map (1872). (2 and 3)
