Full Description
Site of Basted Paper Mill, operating C17 - C20. Operated by: Wm Quelch late C17/early C18; Clement Taylor 1757 (awarded 20 pounds for his manufacture of a paper made from silk rags); John Taylor in 1789 (when 6 journeymen papermakers struck in connection with an early combination, as reported in the Kentish Gazette 12/6/1789). (1) A modern factory replaced all the old buildings except one small shed. The site is to be redeveloped for housing in 1997.
Began operating in 1716, but burnt down in 1917, was rebuilt and worked by steam until 1960. Closed in 1968 after flood damage. Is now known as Basted Mills Public Open Spaces (BMPOS) that nestles between Brough Green, Ightham, Platt and Plaxtol being a haven for wildlife alowing visitors ot enjoy the scenery.
