Full Description
O.S. listed 6" map of 1876 shows limekilns, area now a disused pit. (1) Poss those operated by James Rickwood from before 1895 to at least 1911 and taken over by Thomas Flynn by 1922 and WJ Bushell by 1930. (2)
In 2004, prior to demolition/burial, the Museum of London Archaeology Service carried out recording works at the site. Chalk was extracted from the area from at least 1795 and the quarry was established by 1863. The earliest lime kilns at the site were constructed between 1863 and 1867. A second kiln was added between 1874 and 1898. The kilns had been out of use since at least the 1950s. (3)
