Full Description
The Walmer Way housing development off St Richard's Road, Mill Hill at Deal was subject to a major archaeological excavation programme undertaken by the Dover Archaeological Group during the 1980s. Sutuated between two 19th century chalk quarries, the excavations revealed an extensive multi-period complex, the limits of which were not located in any direction. During the course of the work some major discoveries, several of international significance, were made. These included an important sixth century Anglo-Saxon cemetery, a rare Iron Age inhumation cemetery, a Bronze Age ring-ditch, Neolithic pits and a Romano-British field system. A desk-top survey to assess the extent of the surviving unexcavated area was prepared for the new developer, Prowting Homes Ltd in Nov 1999. This showed that only one small piece of ground was unaffected by quarrying and remained to be investigated and it was recommended that this area was fully excavated before building began. This work was subsequently undertaken by members of the CAT during March 2000. Only three features of archaeological interest were located. They consisted of a very shallow gully and two post-holes. None were datable. Positioning the gully on the overall sitre plan it would seem that this feature is not a continuation of the Roman enclosure ditch previously excavated. The pottery sugggests that it is later and on a different alignment.(1)
