Full Description

TQ 648733. Beacon - site of. William Lombarde's "Carde" of c 1570 shows a beacon at "Gravesend" and a total of 52 beacons in Kent. The beacon system dropped out of use after 1640 (see illust card). (1) Windmill Hill, centred at TQ 648 733, was formerly known as Roggehill, Ronge Hill or Ruggen Hill. A beacon is noted here in 1377, in the 16th c. and as late as 1719. The windmills that later occupied the site are now demolished. (2)
