Monument record TQ 97 NW 128 - Coast Defence Battery: Centre Bastion, Sheerness
Summary
Coast defence battery of 2 x 7" rifled breech loaders, 2 x 9.2" breech loaders on disappearing carriages and 2 x 64pdr rifled muzzel loaders replacing earlier armament some time between 1845 and 1895. Later gun emplacements have destroyed the 7" gun emplacements located at TQ9127275363 and only one of the emplacements for the 64 pdrs remains at TQ9144975282. The 9.2" emplacements are still visible as slight scaps and a projecting wall, but are probably buried intact. An ammunition store between the guns appears intact although the entrance is now blocked.
