Monument record TR 26 NE 220 - Gore Street chalk pit, Monkton

Summary

A post medieval chalk pit was located near St. Mary Magdelene's Church to the east of Gore Street. The site is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd edition historic maps, indicating it was in use until c.1896 at least. On the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey map the site is marked as 'Old Chalk Pit' suggesting it had fallen out of use by c.1922 when this map was released. The feature was visible as an earthwork on RAF/541/484 RP 3023 07-APR-1950, but is levelled on the latest Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021.
