Summary

A commemorative memorial the form of a stone silhouette of a plane marks the spot where Louis Bleriot landed his plane after the first channel crossing on 25th July 1909. The figure is not much over ten feet wide, comprising granite sections pressed into the subsoil with a central plaque presented by the Aero Club. The flight won Bleriot a prize of £1,000 from the Daily Mail; an attempt five days earlier, by Englishman Herbert Latham, had ended when he had ditched in the sea.

The figure is not much over ten feet wide, comprising granite sections pressed into the subsoil with a central plaque presented by the Aero Club. The flight won Bleriot a prize of £1,000 from the Daily Mail; an attempt five days earlier, by Englishman Herbert Latham, had ended when he had ditched in the sea.27' at widest wingspan, and 25' in length. In good condition. Constructed of granite blocks >4" thick approx. 2'x1' set into the turf. Covered sparsely with yellow lichen. (1)
