Full Description
The cross was cut in 1922 as a memorial for the dead of the First World War. Originally there was a granite memorial stone bearing the names of the fallen at the base of the cross, but this was moved to the parish church in 1960 (the small stone commemorating the fallen of the Second World War was also moved at this time). The cross was designed with the contours of the hill and the viewing angle in mind. The shaft is 4.7m wide at the base, tapering to 4.4m at the top; each of the arms measures 7.6m at the lower edge and 7.5m at the upper edge. The cross is 57.6m tall. (1)
