- On 28 May 1920, the Sevenoaks Chronicle and Courier published a report headed “Shoreham’s Glorious Dead”. It described a ceremony on Empire Day, 24 May 1920, in which the first sod of “a gigantic cross cut out on the hillside above the village" was removed by a local landowner.
- On 20 August 1920, the Church Times published an article on the digging of the Cross entitled “The Valley of the Great White Cross”. It noted: “Now it [the Cross] is all but finished, and the great cross shines across the valley in the rising sun”.
- On 10 September 1920, the Sevenoaks Chronicle reported: “The Memorial Cross on the hillside is now completed and forms a most striking memorial to the glorious dead of Shoreham.”
Recent measurements by the Shoreham and District Historical Society show it to be about 102 feet long and about 55 feet wide. The Cross was rechalked and re-landscaped in 1997 and is no longer in poor condition or overgrown. (2)
