Monument record TR 05 SW 25 - Dene hole, Little Hurst Wood, Shottenden

Summary

A probable dene hole, or chalk well, was discovered when ground collapsed near Howletts Farm in 1994. The hole, on a South facing chalk bank of an old quarry, was almost completely circular, 1.5m deep and 9m wide. Whilst the feature is not certainly a dene hole it seems probable and a number of similar features are located In close proximity at Howletts Farm. This is further supported by the identification of a chalk pit at the site on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map of c.1861.
