Full Description

Area TQ 623740 (1). In 1847 the railway cutting through Church Field, to the south of Northfleet Church, uncovered inhumations and cremations with Anglo-Saxon spears, shield bosses and handles, a knife-sword, part of a bucket, and saucer brooches(4). A further twenty graves were cut through when the field was being quarried in 1899-1900(1)(2); other objects were found west of the church in 1901. (7)

The cemetery "contains the only certain evidence of cremation, essentially a Saxon rite, in Kentish cemeteries; and further, the burnt remains were in urns of hand-made pottery, typical of Anglian and Saxon manufacture, and altogether different from the wheel-made bottle:shaped vessels found in Jutish territory". (6)

The finds are in Gravesend Public Library and Maidstone Museum. (1-7) Large selection of finds seen in Maidstone Museum and Gravesend Library. Outlying graves at TQ 62207413 and TQ 62267381. (a) (8) The site of the cemetery lies within a disused and overgrown chalk quarry. (9) Additional bibliography. (10)(11)
