Full Description

A post-medieval chalk Pit was located in Quex Park. It is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map of c.1858-1873, and appears on the 2nd edition (c.1891-1898) as 'Old Chalk Pit'. The boundary is still visible on the later 3rd and 4th edition maps (c.1905-1940) and remains to this day. (1)

A feature is shown in the area of the chalk pit on the OS drawings of AD 1797. The site is marked as a working chalk pit on the Birchington Tithe Map.

In 2011 Kent Underground Research Group surveyed tunnels at the quarry. Five galleries extend out from the pit, all less than 30m in length. The quarry and associated lime kiln were in use from the early 19th century until the 1890s. Slots cut in the walls of the galleries suggest that they were used after excavation, perhaps for storage or agricultural activity. (2)
