Monument record TR 35 SE 395 - Sandown Emergency Coastal Battery

Summary

The site of Sandown coastal battery, an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery was operational by 1942 and mounted two 6-inch guns. It is referenced as being manned by 235 and 236 Batteries of 563 Coast Regiment until 1943. Aerial photography from 1979 shows that the site is occupied by housing and a seafront area.
