Full Description
Summarised from the report:
During a watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust near Gorley Almshouses, Dover ahead of the development of the car parking area associated with the almshouses, a chalk block Roman wall was located. The wall was aligned roughly N-S and survived to a height of 0.28m. It was 0.39m wide and only appeared to be faced on the eastern side. The east face was constructed from squared chalk blocks set in a cream brown clay with frequent chalk grits. The core and western side of the wall was formed of less regular lumps of chalk set in a similar bonding material. The wall was sealed by the same hill-wash deposit which was encountered across the rest of the site. The section showed that this deposit was 0.3m to 0.4m thick and produced a single small pot sherd of Medieval sandy ware of probable 13th-14th century date. A small slot dug down its eastern face showed that the Roman wall had been built upon a dump layer or orange brown clay with frequent small chalk lumps. There was no foundation to this wall. Abutting the eastern face of the wall was a layer of grey brown clay loam with chalk lumps, this produced a total of 9 small Roman pot sherds which have been provisionally dated to the 2nd century and include the rim from a bead rimmed pie dish, numerous examples of which have been found in the nearby CLBR fort. The lack of associated floor or facing on the western side suggests that this was a retaining wall rather that the wall of a building. The wall runs parallel with the west wall of the fort and must be lain approximately 11m beyond it, almost opposite the north-west corner of the fort. (1)
