Summary

During building work at the rear of 221 Marlborough Road, Gillingham, a shaft was revealed. This shaft was identified as a Chalkwell, or Denehole possibly dating from the 17th century. The shaft had 4 diametrically opposing chambers.

Full Description

During building work at the rear of 221 Marlborough Rd, Gillingham, a shaft was revealed. A chalkwell was found and may date from C17, but uncertain. It covers an area of 7m x 5.25m and has 4 diametrically opposing chambers with maximum height of 2.75m. It was filled with cement shortly after discovery and was not surveyed. (1)
