Summary

An Early Medieval 9th century coin hoard and silver pendant cross found together, apparently during digging operations in a field, in either 1835 or 1838. The hoard consists of 552 Saxon coins and dates from 814 to the end of the 9th century but mainly of Burgred, King of Mercia (852-74). All the finds are in the British Museum. The pendant cross is illustrated in R. A. Smiths article in The Victoria History of the Counties of England, Kent, volume 1 (1908).

Full Description

[TQ 63907327] Saxon Coins found here [T.I.] (1) Saxon Coins found (A.D.1835) [T.I.] (2) A hoard of 552 Saxon coins, dating from 814 to the end of the 9th c. but mainly of Burgred (842-74), was found at Gravesend between Perry St. [TQ 636731] and the cemetery [TQ 641732] in the autumn of 1838 (3)(4); O.N, B. gives 1835: 'found during digging operations in a field west of the Boro. Cemetery.' With the hoard was a silver pendant cross (see illust.(3)). All finds are in the Brit.Mus. (Ex - H.P. Borrell Coll.)(5). Additional references (6,7).
