Full Description
Ash Brewery founded in 1837 by J.Bushell. Acquired by W. Gardner in 1840 and traded as Gardner & Godden in 1855. In 1951 they amalgamated with Tomson & Wotton Ltd of Ramsgate and formed Combined breweries Ltd. Brewing ceased at the site in 1954. The Brewhouse was later demolished, but some buildings still remain. (1)
Two brick-built cellars were found during an evaluation on the site in 2003. Both were filled with demolition material during the 1960s. Some structural elements were also found possibly relating to the workhouse that formerly stood on the site, elements of which were later incorporated into the brewery. (3-4)
J Bushell converted the Parish Workhouse into a brewery when he founded Ash Brewery in 1837. The Old Workhouse is shown on the 1840 Tithe map.
